Okay, so continuity and cannon issues aside I have been pleasantly surprised by Morrison’s yarn so far. This last year of Batman has seemed a bit disjointed and I had some reservations about the RIP premise from the get go. However, Morrison has delved deep into the Batman mythos and is showing no fear when it comes to playing with the holiest of all superhero origins. He is almost teasing the reader, with all of the possible clues thrown out in the past two issues, about the mastermind behind the mysterious Black Glove organization. Every bit of dialogue has double meanings and almost dagger like edges when aimed at the Bat. No one, not even Alfred (#677 pg. 4. I love this layout…Alfred comes off very sinister.), looks like they can be trusted. What is the true history of the Waynes? What is the Joker's role? Zur-en-arrh? Can Jezebel be trusted? With more questions than answers I am very excited to see how this story plays out. I would love to hear some thoughts.

My initial thoughts are utter confusion. I am so lost as to what is going on. I admit that I have only picked up an issue here or there so some of my confusion is my own fault. The problem I am having right now is Morrison's almost pathological need to be as clever as possible. With his multiple time/scene jumps throughout the first 2 issues and lack of bridging devices, the reader is left on his own to decipher the various threads and put them in a cohesive pattern. This is not a story for the neophyte Batman reader. Hopefully this will become clearer down the road. Art is awesome by the way.

The Bat Mite has made an appearance as of issue 678, so that's it. I'm out.

Haha...it's too soon to give up now. Bat-Mite is obviously a construct of Bruce’s subconscious and he is not very happy about Bruce thinking he is the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh. There is still a lot of set up going on here and personally, I am enjoying the ride. If Bruce does think that he is the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, does he believe he has superpowers (Hint: Cover of 679…falling or flying)? The COV and Black Glove are continuing to push Bruce further down the road to insanity and Honor Jackson was no help. Who could be the big character reveal next issue? I’m guessing Joe Chill.

An update on Carla and Lance

It’s Wednesday, which would typically mean Carla Hoffman’s The Fifth Color column would have been posted today if last week’s tragedy hadn’t occurred. Carla and her husband Lance suffered severe burns in the Tea Fire in the Santa Barbara, Calif. area last week. I want to say thanks to everyone who has commented [...]

One last poster (we swear!) for The Spirit

There appears to be some sort of competition between Warner Bros. and Lionsgate to see which studio can churn out the most posters for one movie. Warner Bros. is winning with Watchmen, but it’s not for lack of trying on Lionsgate’s part. Anyway, Cinematical has the roughly 173rd, and supposedly final, poster for Frank Miller’s adaptation [...]

Watch a Wolverine and the X-Men trailer

Marvel has released what I believe is the third trailer for Wolverine and the X-Men, the animated series set to debut Jan. 23 on Nicktoons. It looks surprisingly good — good enough that those tired of seeing Wolverine everywhere may overlook his front-and-center role in the cartoon. Hey, how else are they to capitalize on that [...]

Yes, he has! No, he hasn’t!

Despite claims to the contrary, writer James Robinson apparently hasn’t quit DC Comics’ Superman books. On Monday Rich Johnston reported that he understood Robinson had left the titles, “and the DCU in general,” after an argument with Executive Editor Dan DiDio. But yesterday editor Matt Idelson told the Superman Homepage fan site that Robinson has not quit. I [...]

They fought the market; the market won

Last week Executive Editor Dan DiDio revealed that DC Comics is canceling Blue Beetle, a move made official on Monday with the release of February solicitations. Not to be outdone, Marvel on Tuesday announced the cancellation of She-Hulk. Again. But at least the publisher did so with humor: “She’s been savage. She’s been sensational. She’s been [...]
