Same as every week, I’m buying a bunch of titles, but these are the ones that I’m looking forward to the most:

Batman And The Outsiders Vol 2 #5 – this series has been a real surprise. The art is decent, but the opening story was really interesting and had great character interplay. This latest re-launch seems to have revitalized the series, at least for me.
Death Of The New Gods #7 – This is my favorite of the countdown books, but I have to admit to being a big Jim Starlin fan. And now that we’re reaching the end I’m really eager to see how it all plays out.
Captain America Vol 5 #34 – Brubaker has made this an interesting read month after month. Even without Steve Rogers this continues to be the most interesting and fully realized vision of Captain America that I’ve read.
Captain Marvel Vol 5 #4 – I’m totally hooked by the upcoming Secret Invasion and this appears to be an integral part of the setup. Plus, Lee Weeks’ art really appeals to me.
Immortal Iron Fist #13 – I loved the original Claremont/Byrne series (if you’ve never read it buy the Essential, it’s with the money), but this new take on Iron Fist is even better. And the various art styles add real ambience. The current story arc is reaching its climax and if you’ve never read it, it’s well worth a try.
Incredible Hercules #115 – I’m still not convinced that Hercules can carry a monthly title but this current story has been fantastic!
Iron Man Vol 4 #27 – The art’s been great, and the Mandarin story has been subtle and intriguing.
Order Vol 2 #9 – Matt Fraction made this a great monthly character study . But since it’s cancelled with #10 this probably isn’t the best jumping on point for new readers. If you’ve never read it, just wait for the trade.
Thor Vol 3 #7 – I’ve read the preview pages online and the Djurdjevic art looks amazing! JMS’ vision has brought new life to a series that had really lost it’s way before being cancelled.
World War Hulk Aftersmash Warbound #4 – This series (along with Damage Control) has offered an interesting conclusion to a rather disappointing event (World War Hulk). And Leonard Kirk’s art is top notch

I’ve read enough bad or lackluster anthologies over the years to know it’s not something you can just slap together. It takes real editorial vision and guidance to put together a solid collection of work, whether you’re talking about new material or older reprints. Which is my roundabout way of saying just how impressed I am [...]

Long live Smallville’s Legion?

If IMDB is to be believed, we now know the identities of Smallville’s teen-agers from the future. The Kryptonsite fan site points out that the entry for the Geoff Johns-written “Legion” episode has been updated with 25-year-old Ryan Kennedy as Cosmic Boy, and 17-year-old Calum Worthy as Lightning Lad. They join 22-year-old Canadian actress/pop singer Alexz [...]

Neveldine, Taylor drop out of Jonah Hex

Jonah Hex has survived the Civil War, countless gunfights and a trip into the far-flung future. But can he endure that dreaded Hollywood menace known as “creative differences”? Variety reports the Crank team of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have dropped out as directors of the Warner Bros. adaptation, which was announced in July 2007. The reason [...]

An update on Carla and Lance

It’s Wednesday, which would typically mean Carla Hoffman’s The Fifth Color column would have been posted today if last week’s tragedy hadn’t occurred. Carla and her husband Lance suffered severe burns in the Tea Fire in the Santa Barbara, Calif. area last week. I want to say thanks to everyone who has commented [...]

One last poster (we swear!) for The Spirit

There appears to be some sort of competition between Warner Bros. and Lionsgate to see which studio can churn out the most posters for one movie. Warner Bros. is winning with Watchmen, but it’s not for lack of trying on Lionsgate’s part. Anyway, Cinematical has the roughly 173rd, and supposedly final, poster for Frank Miller’s adaptation [...]

REVIEW: "Amazing Spider-Man" #578

One of this week's highly anticipated releases, writer Mark Waid makes his debut on the thrice-monthly "Amazing Spider-Man." How does the issue, with art from Marcos Martin, stack up? Doug Zawisza has the review.

Permanent Damage
