24 COMICS DAY CHALLENGE IS BACK!

DOWNTOWN COMICS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE 24 HOUR COMIC DAY CHALLENGE IS BACK!

This year’s event will be held at the newly revamped (and infinitely less cramped) Downtown Comics West, 7301 west 10th street, Indianapolis, IN 46214. The challenge will begin promptly at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 20th 2012 and end at 5 p.m. on Sunday October 21st. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, October 17th 2012 at midnight.

WE'RE DOING THINGS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THIS YEAR:

Don't fear the change - change is good! First off, we'll be hosting the event at a new venue: Downtown Comics West. Ben and I have worked really hard throughout the past year to provide a space that is as much a great venue for the Challenge as it is a better shopping experience for all. I hope you'll come check out the store between now and the 20th to see what you've missed!

In addition to the new venue we'll also be giving our participants some new options and suggestions as to how we (and they) want to run the event. See options below:

Option 1: we divide 24 pages by the number of participants and each person take that number of pages to, as a group, produce one 24 page book in 24 hours. For example, if we have 6 participants, each person would produce 4 pages each (24 pages divided by 6 artists = 4 pages each).

Option 2: everyone agrees on a "random" overarching story theme. Each artist attempts to finish a 24 page comic in 24 hours as usual. At the end of the challenge, I go back in and connect all of the stories with short interstitials using a panel of each as a jump-off point from one comic to a landing panel on the next. This would be a great way to incorporate Infinite Canvas to show off the final results of everyone's work.
Option 3: same as option 2 except everyone finishes with an open-ended panel on the last page of their comic to connect it to someone else's. For example, if artist 1's comic ends with an alligator eating a sandwich, then artist 2's must begin with same. "Last Panels" will be drawn randomly from a hat by each artist and it will be their goal to end their comic on that subject.

These options are by no means set in stone but, rather, are provided to get the discussion going between now and then. Questions, suggestions or comments can be emailed directly to Jeff Himes (email is below).

We hope to make this year's event something special - MORE TO COME!
