Here's a little article about Frederic Wertham and the comics crackdown of the 50s. I found this very interesting as a comics fan and former history major.
Yeah, seriously. Can't we go back to the days when Republicans had a monopoly on all the freedom hating (e.g. they hate freedom of expression, freedom of marriage, freedom from illegal search & seizure, etc.)? ;-)
Hillary Clinton is leading the same witch hunt against video games today that the government had against comic books in the 50's. Ten or 20 years from now, video games will be vindicated as the second original American art form, comic books, of course, being the first truly American art form.
It makes me sad to see Democrats that hate freedom so much.
Fascinating isn't it. I constantly use this time period when I talk to libraries and schools about the ebb and flow of the comic book industry. Particularly note-worthy although not mention exactly is the fact that EC comics was both used as the scapegoat and sacrificial lamb of these purges as the comics code was specifically designed to put that company out of business. And not for moral or ethic reasons either. EC was currently the Marvel of its time and the other publishers saw an opportunity to kill 2 birds with one stone. This time period is also considered the schism that kept comics in the "dark ages" in the west while the east remained immune from self-censorship which partially explains the influence, breath, and shear numbers of manga readers/comics.
