Cursed Pirate Girl by Jeremy Bastian

http://www.jeremybastian.com/cursed.html

Wow...just Wow

This is an amazing book that appeared on comic shop shelves this week and it's like a DIY comic from a brilliant friend living in the 19th century. The silver inked logo and stamped price on the cover make it feel like Bastian made the comic just for you. And once you go inside, the artwork looks a bit Yellow Kid,… Continue

Top comic book runs (#5-#1)

5. Usagi Yojimbo – Stan Sakai

Like Jeff Smith, Wendy & Richard Pini, and Dave Sim, Stan Sakai made comics his way, telling stories about feudal Japan through the eyes of a ronin rabbit. And while it could have lent itself to parody, and make no mistake, parts of Usagi are hilarious, Sakai made us believe in an ancient time populated by animal-people and taught us Japanese history and life truths simultaneously. Frank… Continue

Top ten comic book runs (#10-#6)

10) Alpha Flight – John Byrne

During my golden years of reading comics, this was THE one. I had just missed the Claremont/Byrne years of Uncanny X-Men, but I made sure I got to the drug store every month to pick up the new issue of Alpha Flight. They were an unusual team, echoing the Defenders, in that they didn’t seem to like hanging out with each other…at all. But the Hudsons, James and Heather, were strong enough… Continue

Wolverine - Prodigal Son review

For some reason, I'm getting more and more into manga lately. Kenshin Rurouni, Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, Mail, 20th Century Boys...I'm finding the tricks and story techniques different from the big two and it's been a lot of fun.

Anyway, Antony Johnston (a British writer who has done work I've liked at Oni) and Filipino artist Wilson Tortosa are the team behind this new Wolverine series. You have to know absolutely nothing about… Continue

The new animated Wonder Woman film on DVD is actually pretty great.

wonder woman? Pictures, Images and Photos ' />

I've seen most of the Marvel and DC animated, made-for-DVD, films and this one, much to my surprise, is THE best one of the bunch. Gail Simone helped write it and a lot of the humor she brings to her comic writing is evident in the movie. Russell and Fillion play off each other very, very well. And, if you love Greek mythology, there's even more fun to be had. The is the best version of Diana I've seen...in any… Continue

Australia (2008)

I love Howard Hawks' films...Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Red River, and Rio Bravo are amazing pieces of entertainment. As I was watching Australia, the new Baz Luhrmann movie with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, I kept thinking...man, Baz must really love Hawks' movies, too.

As evidenced by the films above, the mismatched couple who fight and fight until they realize they're perfect for each other (see Much Ado… Continue

Russell T. Davies' new book about his Doctor Who years

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article4759150.ece

Russell Davies has a book coming out this fall...you can order it from the friendly guys at the comic shop...I did...which covers his years running the longest-lived sci-fi television series in history - Doctor Who. There are a lot of interesting tidbits in the preview articles on the London Times website. My favorite may be that Davies… Continue

Good readin' at the shop tomorrow!

I'll be picking up these comics:

The Age of the Sentry (Jeff Parker is a sleeper joy-of-a-writer)

All-Star Superman (man, I can't believe it's over)

Amazing Spider-Man (they really want us to believe that Menace is a certain person...but we just might have the gender wrong)

Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! (best DC kids title coming out currently)

Captain Britain and MI:13 (Blade is back, baby)

Castle… Continue

What I'll be looking for tomorrow at the shop

Amazing Spider-Man - I like the character of Anti-Venom a lot more than I expected...and I'm actually primed for the Norman Osborn vs Menace battle...if there is one.

Criminal - really liked the first part of this story

Goon - one of Holly's fave, I gave up a looooooong time ago

Patsy Walker, Hellcat - the writing on this one by Katherine Immonen is ginchy to the max

Secret Invasion - the Henry Pym and… Continue

Amazing Spider-Man BND Extra! review by Doc Beechler

Picked up and really enjoyed the BND - Extra! last week. It has three stories by many of the writers and artists already involved in BND. (more Marcos Martin!)

The first is a look back at the early years of gangster baddie, Hammerhead. He's quite the crime film snob, did you know that...and Russian. Well...the last time we saw him, during Civil War, he was trying to muscle in on the Kingpin and got a few adamantium bullets in the head… Continue
