Downtown Comics

The source for comics and pop culture in Indianapolis since 1993

I wanted to see what everyone else thinks of Kick-Ass. I know its had mixed reviews. I really like it. I think it was hilarious and also a really good idea. The concept of someone like one of us/me(comic book geek), in the present day world, actually trying to become a real life super hero with no powers. To just do it with hard training and putting on a wet suit -the idea is absurd. I guess thats why I liked it. When he fights his first bad guys- the neighborhood punks spraying graffiti, he gets his ass kicked so bad. Broken bones. Then stabbed. Then hit by a car to boot. I was laughing out loud. I also liked to shout out Whedon's Astonishing X-Men. I will definitely keep buying this to see what happens to our great super hero.

I thought kick-ass was very good. I bought it and the variant with high hopes, especially since it is the first Marvel/Icon comic I've purchased. It did get off to a relatively typical "I'm not special and I want to be start" but then it really surprised me with the afore mentioned brutality with the "heroes" first interaction with crime. It is also one of the few new single issue comics I have re-read. And I am so looking forward to the March 19 release of issue 2.

I had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the dialogue and narration. The story flowed so well, the concept drew me in, and the ending was brutal but very appropriate to the story. Of course Romita Jr.'s art was perfect for the story, at least for my tastes. I'm also looking forward to #2, although I'm not so sure that it's shipping on the 19th as solicited.

Olivia Munn in Iron Man 2?

Olivia Munn might be in Iron Man 2 — but as who? Techland and FanboyWEB are saying that Munn will be joining Tony Stark as the Scarlet Witch — although because she’s a mutant (and because of mutants’ ties to the X-Men franchise, currently controlled by Fox), I have to throw a challenge flag. AceShowbiz also has [...]

Review: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls is a perfectly readable, albeit unnecessary and underwhelming, prequel to the surprise mega-hit Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen. They’re running a contest at Quirk’s website where you can win a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies gift-pack, but my day job, [...]

Straczynski on Superman and Wonder Woman = AWWWW YEAH

For those of you who have been checking out the Mothership, you’ll see that J. Michael Straczynski has been announced as the new writer for — wait for it — Superman AND Wonder Woman. My reaction: In all seriousness, this gets me excited about Supes and Wondy in a big way — JMS is one of [...]
